Northern Exposure was an offbeat comedy drama series, which gained a great fan following and enthusiastic press during its five-season run. It’s a TV show concerned Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), a recent medical school graduate who attended Columbia University on a scholarship after graduation. He had to spend four years working as a general practitioner in the small town of Cicely, AK, where he is to be paid the princely sum of 465 dollars a month. As Fleishman bides his time in Cicely, he gets to know many of the local residents, including Maurice Minnifield (Barry Corbin), a multi-millionaire former astronaut who is the city’s largest property owner. Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner) was a bush pilot (and the town’s mayor) who has an on-again, off-again romance with Fleishman, Chris Stevens (John Corbett), the philosophical DJ at the local radio station; Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), the owner of a local watering hole who has married Shelly Marie (Cynthia Geary), a young woman who was once in love with Maurice, Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), a genius-IQ teenager who wants to become a filmmaker, and Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles), a soft-spoken Native American who serves as Fleishman’s receptionist.

It ran from 1990 to 1995 with six seasons which could really not be described in words. I really mean it.

The series was premiered on July 12, 1990 with the first episode “Pilot” of season 1. The show finally ended with the last episode Tranquility Base of the last season (season 6) of the series. Total number of episodes which had been aired in the complete series is 110. “Northern Exposure” was a very successful show but due to the downfall in ratings around 1994-1995, its got cancelled. The ratings fell down because of various reasons like unexplained character trait changes, departure of Morrow and few more

The popularity of the show could be judged from the fact that it won 27 awards and was nominated for 57 awards during its five year of run. Among the 27 awards won by the series, three were Emmy awards, two were Golden Globe awards and one Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

I remember those days when “Northern Exposure” was running. I started watching the show from the seventh episode of the season 1. And trust me till the last episode of season 6 , I never missed even a single episode. I was so much into the show that I often used to write about it and was very sad when it came to an end.

The outstanding nature of Northern Exposure can be gauged from the fact that the show was nominated at the Emmys for around 50 odd awards along with several Golden Globes. The creators of this series, John Falsey and Joshua Brand, got two Peabody Awards, consecutively, one in 1991 and the other was shared in 1992 along with and Finnegan-Pinchuk Company and CBS. Some of the major awards it won are:
The 1992 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series presented to Joshua Brand and John Falsey. ( For the same awards, the show was nominated in 1991 as well)
The 1992, Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series presented to Valerie Mahaffey.
The 1992 Emmy Award for Individual Achievement in Writing for a Drama Series presented to Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov for “Seoul Mates.”

The Golden Award for Best Drama series in the year, 1991 and 1992 while being nominated for the same in 1993 as well.
The 1993 Directors Guild Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Shows for the episode “Cicely”.
And this is not all, there have been several nominations as I had just mentioned. In 1994 Screen Actors Guild Awards, the whole cast of the show was nominated for the category, Best Cast - Comedy Series
In 1991, besides winning other Emmys, the show was nominated for: Outstanding Sound Mixing - Drama Series, for the episode “Aurora Borealis: A Fairy Tale For Big People” and also for its Pilot episode, John Falsey and Joshua Brand were nominated for Outstanding Writing - Drama Series
Rob Marrow was nominated from the show for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Drama Series in the years, 1991, 1992 and 1993 but it’s a pity that he never won any.

Janine Turner was nominated as well for her character “Maggie O’Connell” in Northern Exposure for the Golden Globe Award category of Best Actress - Drama Series, in the years, 1991, 1992 and even in 1993, but again she never won any. In 1992, again, for the Best Supporting Actor - (Mini) Series or TV Film Golden Globe Award, John Corbett was nominated as well, for his portrayal of “Chris” in the series.
Then there was a Grammy Award nomination and some nominations from the Directors Guild of America Awards as well.
