Rob Morrow is an American actor of Jewish descent. He is the son of industrial lighting manufacturer Murray Morrow and dental hygienist Diane Francis Morrow. His parents divorced when Rob was just nine years old. He is a founding member of Naked Angels which is a non-profit group committed to theatre with members like Marisa Tomei, Fisher Stevens, Ron Rifkin and Nancy Travis to name a few. He is also one of the members of the Board of Directors of Project ALS which was co-founded by Jenifer Estess who suffered from ALS, a fatal disease that affects the muscles and the nerves. The organization is committed to funding the research necessary for finding effective treatments and a cure for people suffering from ALS. In 1998 he married actress Debbon Ayer and the couple has a seven year old daughter named Tu Simone Ayer Morrow.

Rob started working in theatre for Tom O’Horgan and Norman Mailer. He has worked in over two dozen television shows and movies besides directing nearly five projects which include television episodes as well as movies and in addition has also written and produced a handful of other projects. On television he has acted in shows like Fame, Tattingers, Saturday Night Live, Only Love, Hudson’s Law, Street Time and Numb3rs etc., besides playing the critically acclaimed role of Dr. Joel Fleischman in Northern Exposure. Rob was nominated for three Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for his role in the series. Rob has also acted in movies like Quiz Show, Mother, Sam the Man, The Guru, The Emperor’s Club, Going Shopping and The Bucket List etc. He has also been the director of the various episodes of Street Time, Joan of Arcadia and Numb3rs. In addition he has also written and directed The Silent Alarm and Maze besides being the producer of Maze.

Role in Northern Exposure

In Northern Exposure, he plays the lead role of Dr. Joel Fleischman. He has recently graduated from the medical school and is assigned to the remote city of Cicely to pay back the loan extended by the state of Alaska for his medical studies. Although initially he is not happy with the idea of living in such a remote area amongst peculiar people, towards the end of the series he comes to terms with the fact that he has finally become a Cicelian.
