Season 1 of the Northern Exposure premiered on the 12th July 1990. The season had a total of eight episodes. In the first episode, Dr. Joel Fleischman upon his arrival in Alaska comes to know that he has been assigned the job as the sole doctor in the remote town of Cicely which is owned and dominated by Maurice Minnifield. Ed seeks Joel’s help to treat his medicine man uncle while Chris gets fired from the radio station for upsetting Maurice and Maggie gets injured. Later a hermit dies leaving his property in the joint possession of Maggie and Joel who have conflicting plans about its use. Next, Holling develops cold feet about his wedding to Shelly while Maurice and Joel try to impress a Japanese businessman who is interested in building a resort in Cicely.

While Joel’s fiancée Elaine comes for a visit, the town is down with flu and Marilyn comes up with a remedy that is a smelly Indian concoction. The shaky relationship between Holling and Shelly receives a further setback when Shelly’s husband turns up while Rick gets into a medical problem and Ed cannot concentrate on his writing for a blockbuster movie. Maurice tries to mould Chris as the Minnifield heir after his brother’s death while Ed, Holling and Shelly go after a deadly bear and Maggie successfully takes over the childbearing class of Joel.
